José Antonio MENDIZABAL ETXABE

- Born in Arrasate-Mondragón, Gipuzkoa, Souhtern Basque Country, (April 1946).

- In the sixties he studied Industrial Mastery at the Professoinal School of Mondragon and worked as a fitter in the factory ELMA S.A.

- Member of the JOC (Catholic Working Youth) and of the anti-Franco resistance, he had to go into exile to Belgium in 1969 (after the State of Emergency ordered by Franco´s government in the Summer of 1968). He stayed in Belgium as a political refugee until the amnesty of 1977.

- Graduated in Economics at he University of Louvain (studies made during his stay in Belgium as a political refugee).

- When he came back to the Basque Country in 1977 he worked as a teacher and co-founder of the new educational centres of IPES (social schools) in Oñati and Beasain, as a full-time member of the trade-union LAB for a year and a half and at the Business Division of Caja Laboral of the Cooperative Group of Mondragon.

- At present he works as a full professor of Economical Structure at the University of the Basque Country. .

- He is a managing member of the Institute of Cooperative Law and Social Economy of the University of the Basque Country.

- He is the author of a Doctorate Thesis on Limited Companies in the context of the Social Economy: "Las Sociedades Anónimas en el contexto de la Economía Social".

- He has obtained certificates and awards of the National University of El Salvador, the Central American University of Managua and the Institute of European Studies of La Habana.

- He has taken part as speaker at the different Alternative Forums of the last years (50th Anniversary of the WMF in Madrid. Summit of the European Convergence in Madrid, Summit of the G-7 in Lyon).

- He is a specialist for issues about Social Economy, Self-management, National Matter, Organization of Work, Development and Globalization. He is the author of numerous articles on those topics and on some other derived from the social and political praxis in the Basque Country (democracy, self-determination, sharing out of the work, etc.).
